Gallery: Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid
DESCRIPTION:
Unlike Chevy’s Tahoe Hybrid and Silverado Hybrid, the 2009 Malibu Hybrid will not be using GM’s two-mode hybrid system. This $22,790 sedan, manufactured in Kansas City, is an award winning hybrid sedan that is turning heads throughout the industry. With an EPA measured mileage of 24/32, the Malibu Hybrid stacks up well against the Toyota Camry Hybrid’s 33 highway miles per gallon). The 36V electric motor and 2.4L Ecotev VVT 4-cylinder engine blend together seamlessly to accommodate the drivers wishes. This four-speed sedan operates its electric motor and gasoline engine according to driving conditions. Slow speeds call for more electric motor usage. Conversely, higher speeds and faster acceleration demands more of the gasoline motor. Chevrolet is able to keep costs low by not implementing a full hybrid system similar to Toyota’s, which limits fuel efficiency. Rather, Chevy focuses on the timing of operation of the gasoline engine and emphasizes limited use to conserve gas. The Saturn Aura Green Line has a very similar build. Overall, the Malibu Hybrid is a low priced hybrid provides you with great mileage and is a better by than the discontinued Honda Accord Hybrid, but the Toyota Camry Hybrid and Honda Civic Hybrid offer better hybrid integration at high prices.
