Gallery: Nissan Altima Hybrid
DESCRIPTION:
To compete with the Toyota Camry Hybrid, Honda Accord Hybrid (which was a big joke), and Honda Civic Hybrid, Nissan designed the 2008 Nissan Altima Hybrid as its entry vehicle into the sedan hybrid market. Starting at a competitive $25,480, the Altima Hybrid starts at about a grand less than the Camry and 3 grand more than the Civic Hybrid. The Accord Hybrid isn’t being produced anymore. With 198 hp, the Altima Hybrid holds more power than its non-Hybrid sister (175 hp). The sealed nickel-metal hydride battery produces 30kw, equivalent to 40hp. Stopping the vehicle is a set of 11.7” front vented discs and 11.5 rear disc brakes and ABS and EBD. To ensure a smooth ride, Nissan has integrated its signature Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS) into this hybrid model. An estimated 35/33 mpg makes the front-wheel drive Altima more comparable to the Camry’s 33/34 than the Civic Hybrid’s 40/45. A 0 to 60 of 9 seconds is decent for this 3400lb+ hybrid. Optional equipment includes a 6.5” touch-screen navigation system with voice recognition,, XM NavTraffic, Bluetooth hands-free phone system, and a Digital Bose audio system. While the Altima provides traditional Nissan performance and styling with a hybrid twist, the closely priced Camry provides larger cabin space and legendary Toyota quality and service. The Honda Civic is a great, smaller alternative. You won’t be making a mistake buying a Nissan Altima, but the Toyota Camry Hybrid and Honda Civic Hybrid would serve you better.
