What happens with you give an Italian car designer some American muscle? You get the Ford Mustang Giugiaro Concept. Italian car designer Fabrizio Giugiaro from the world renowned Giugiaro car design family went to the Ford motor company with a passion to design a future concept inspired by the latest Ford Mustang. Giugiaro is world renowned for his bold designs of companies such as Bugatti, Lotus, Mazda, Volkswagen, Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, and even Fiat. This Ford would be Fabrizio Giugiaro’s first attempt at putting his touch on an American car, and it seems first time is a charm. The original Giugiaro, Giorgetto, was instrumental in designing the 1965 Bertone Mustang and the Chevrolet Corvette Moray.
The result of Italdesign’s years of experience in car design and collaboration with Ford is the Giugiaro Mustang concept car that debuted at the 2006 Los Angeles International Auto Show. Even the paint is a show stopper. The car created large crowds at the LA autoshow, we had a tough time getting close to it.
The engine in the Giugiaro concept is the same engine from the Mustang GT except it has a twin screw supercharger to give it a little more power. It sports tuning by Italdesign and Ford GT fuel injectors. The front body work allows more air flow to the engine compartment and takes care of the additional heat generated from the supercharger. The end result is 500 hp at only 11 psi of boost from the supercharger.
To keep up in the corners, it is equipped with a custom Ford racing handling pack. It has Dynamic-tuned dampers, lowering springs and new sway bars. The result is a 1.5 inch lower ride height and slot car handling in the corners. In addition, the car has been widened 1.2 inches up front and 3.1 inches in the back with give it a much wider stance and footprint.
Italdesign has brought European styling to the All American icon. Giugiaro has reached his goal of making the American Pony look more like a Stallion. With its Lambo like doors, sleekly shaved door handles, and its leather and aluminum interior, this Euro Stang is one hot setup.
