Video: BMW 635D - Fifth Gear
DESCRIPTION:
This is Fifth Gear's test of BMW's newest itineration of the 6 series, the 635d. It is one of the first grand touring luxury cars that is powered by diesel. In order to test its driving capabilities, one of the Fifth Gear hosts will take it on a drive through Europe, which should be no problem as this car can travel for an astounding 630 miles on just one tank of gas.
After the car rolls off the transport ship, they set out onto the highway. This is where we learn about some of the engine specifications: it is a 3.0L twin turbo V6 engine which has a 0-60MPH time of 6.3 seconds and tops out at 155MPH. All this performance is on tap while achieving over 50 MPG.
Our host finally arrives in Germany where he is massively slowed down by the trucks that are lumbering along at their limited pace while side by side. This effectively blocks off all lanes of the Autobahn, making everyones day a little worse. The Germans have a word for this, which translates into "elephant race". Even after breaking free of the huge trucks, the host must maintain a painfully slow 56MPH in order to maintain the highest gas mileage possible (they wish to make the entire journey without stopping for gas). Will he be able to make it? check out the rest of the video to find out.
