Just by name, the Volkswagen R32 and its German origins sounds better than the Mazdaspeed3 GT. Both these vehicles are classified as compact hatchbacks with a true feel for the road. By the numbers, the Volkswagen R32 has a 3.2L V6 engine and produces 247hp and 236 ft @ 2500. The all-wheel R32's twin clutch DSG let you control a 0 to 60 in 6.2 seconds and allows for traveling at speeds up to 130 miles per hour. The 3500lb R32 costs a whopping $9k more than the Mazda, however. The Mazdaspeed3 Grand Touring starts at $24,805 and features a 2.3L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine. The 263hp output is 14 greater than the VW R32 engine's output. The more man-controlled 6-speed manual transmission allow for precise handling and a 0 to 60 of 5.9, 3 tenths of a second faster than the pricier R32.
WebRidesTV takes these two hatches to Horse Thief Mile in Willow Springs, California and tests these mini beasts on the track. The all-wheel drive of the Volkswagen R32 provides great turning control and overall driving stability. The larger V6 engine allows the driver to demand more kick when leaving a turn and the gear shifter is as simple as it is seamless. The front-wheel drive Mazdaspeed3 provides a fun drive, but understeers a bit. The Mazdaspeed3 still provides a good grip on the road and has minimal torque steering in the front, which will tame your wish for an all-wheel drive version. Both cars ride on 18" alloy wheels with the R32 sporting 225/40 R18 92Y XL summer performance tires and the Mazdaspeed3 sporting 215/45 R18 performance tires. The Mazdaspeed3 gets about 20/28 miles per gallon compared to the VW R32's measurement of 18/23, quite a substantial difference generated by the R32's build, which weighs 400lbs more.
While the Volkswagen R32 might perform better on the track, is the Mazdaspeed3 so far behind that the $9,000 difference still justifies the purchase?
