This WebRidesTV video is from the Subaru of America’s booth at the SEMA show in Las Vegas. The Subaru girls go over popular Subaru models such as the 2006 Subaru WRX STI which is prepared for rally events. It has 300 horsepower, a full rollcage, and a modified handbrake. This particular car has raced in many US Rallies as well as the X-Games competition.
We also see Ali Afshar’s Subaru tube chassis drag STI. It weighs 2200 pounds and has a four speed automatic transmission connecting the 2.5 boxer motor to an all wheel drive configuration with drag racing slicks. This particular model has a motor that puts out 1200 horsepower. Julie Stepan is another Subaru drag racer that uses an STI with 1000 horsepower. It runs a 9 second quarter mile with 154 miles per hour trap speed.
Stock Subaru Impreza WRX STI models are the high output versions of Subaru’s other car, the Impreza WRX. STI model feature a larger motor, larger brakes, a more aggressive suspension, larger wheels, body modifications, and more (depending on generation).
The first generation of STI cars was named the GC Chassis. This car was produced from 1992 to 2001. There were numerous revisions to this chassis line but most models were not available for purchase in the United States. The GD Chassis started in 2002 and was made until 2008. This is the chassis line that most in the US are familiar with. While the STI trim did not become available for purchase until 2004, the base model WRX sold in the US and is affectionately known as the “bug eye”.
The current generation STI is named the “GR” chassis and is different from previous models because it comes in the form of a 4 door hatchback. It comes with two engines (depending on the region), a 2.0 Liter horizontal four that produces 304 horsepower and a 2.5 Liter horizontal four that produces 305 horsepower. The stock car has a weight of 3373 pounds and a 103 inch wheelbase. These new STI models are being priced anywhere from $35,000 to $39,000.
